The state’s Office of Attorney General has jurisdiction over security guards, and according to the Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, the Providence, Fall River, Warwick, RI/MA area holds over 3,250 security guard jobs.

That’s a lot of opportunity for those interested in a career in security. And with 18 year old or older high school graduates eligible to apply, there’s sure to be something for everyone.

So what does it take to become a RI unarmed security guard? First, you will have to meet basic requirements such as be a U.S. citizen or resident alien. Second, you must pass a criminal background check and have good character references. Also, you cannot have a similar license or registration previously revoked. Then, you’ll either need to undergo training administered by a local security company or take a training course approved by the Rhode Island Office of Attorney General.

Once you’ve completed training and paid the Guard Card’s $400 fee, you’re ready to start your new career in security.
