Nebraska is a state with a lot of heartland pride – and not just when it comes to football. The Cornhusker State is also pretty lax when it comes to security guard licensing. That’s right, there is no state wide Security Guard license department in Nebraska. So, if you want to become a security guard in this state, your best bet is to get hired by a private local security company. In most cases, the company will oversee the applicant’s security training.
That said however, Nebraska follows the rest of the country in terms of the requirements that a security guard applicant must meet. They must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED. In addition, they must be U.S. citizens or resident aliens, and cannot have any previous felony convictions. However, some agencies may also require applicants to have a Nebraska driver’s license, excellent communication skills, and be in good physical condition.
Once these requirements are met, applicants will then need to complete the training and certification process before they can start working as unarmed security guards.
Armed Security Guards in Nebraska
The process of becoming an armed security guard in Nebraska is not as difficult as one might think. First and foremost, one must be at least 21 years of age, a U.S. citizen or resident alien, have a valid social security card and a Nebraska driver’s license. Secondly, one must undergo further training and testing than their unarmed counterparts; this is to ensure that those carrying weapons are properly trained and informed.
Some of the topics covered in these training courses include safety, de-escalation of hostile situations, gun use, proper firearm grip, stance, draw, and defensive shootings, and laws associated with carrying a firearm. It is also worth mentioning that the private security industry remains mostly unregulated within Nebraska; however, this does not mean that armed officers do not need to receive certification and/or a gun permit from local government officials.
